ACTIVITIES: Discover the ancient rock carvings in Taouz

Morocco has some incredible rock carvings located in remote locations around the deserts. Around 20 kilometres from the village of Taouz is one of those places in Hadjart. We will take you to explore this area and discover its hidden secrets.

With the 4WD we will go off road on the old Dakar rally tracks and show you the petroglyphs from c500BC. There are also several dozen tumuli that are thought to be burial mounds with complex stone bases.

The rock art, archaeology and environment combine to give an overall picture of the past in an area that has little other evidence of the Moroccan Bronze Age. The drawings are considered as a means of communication, images that convey messages, defining ownership of territory and showing off heroes and battles. In this region there are many chariots depicted that are different to other sites, many bovines, a few small humans, labyrinths and one antelope.
